Fall Colors - It's a Wrap

I suppose I should wrap up my posts on fall colors before winter begins on December 22. There is still some lingering color on the prairie, but these photos were taken before hard freezes turned most of the prairie brown.

Redbud, Cercis canadensis

Hercules Club, Zanthoxylum clava-herculis

False Indigo, Amorpha fruticosa

Smooth Sumac, Rhus glabra

(Not Quite) Spineless Prickly Pear Cactus, Opuntia ellisiana (?)

Aromatic Aster, Symphyotrichum oblongifolium

Square bud Primrose, Calylophus berlandieri

Frostweed, Verbesina virginica

Columbine

Black-eyed Susan, Rudbeckia fulgida

Gregg's Mistflower, Conoclinium greggii

  1. Very pretty - love the reds and purples! My garden looks very "autumn-y", too. Makes for a pretty Christmas!

  2. Very pretty photos and a nice view of the details in your garden.

Fascinating how colorful and interesting a garden can be even when it's going dormant.

  3. Some years, my 4 nerve daisy blooms through the winter, with only an occasional down day. Not last year, though- too much ice and snow. The ice and snow, however, have been great for the dropped fruit of the turk's caps. Have a lot of new plants the last 2 years that I can only connect to the snow, cold and ice helping the seeds get going by late winter.

Your yard is fantastic!! I have yard envy!!

  4. Thanks HolleyGarden. I especially like the purple leaf on the columbine. It was strange that it was the only leaf on the plant to change colors. I like your camellias. I miss the one I planted at my previous house.

Thanks Shirley. I miss the summer colors, but I also like the browns that come with autumn.

Thanks S. My four nerve daisies did not bloom much last winter either. It seemed like we had ice almost every other week. They are the only flowers blooming in my yard now. The freeze a couple of weeks ago did not faze them.

  5. Ahhh, it's so nice to see some lingering fall color at this time of year! Love the Aromatic Aster...I've never seen an Aster with such nice fall color. LOVE the Mistflower, I'm totally adding some of it to the garden next year...if I can find space :-)

  6. That's a beautiful set of photos. I think the last one is my favorite...looks like the last bloom of the year as things wind down for their long Winter's nap.
    Great post. David/ :-)
    Merry Christmas from Tropical Texana

  7. Scott, I have a couple of varieties of asters. The other is willow leaf aster and its leaves are a nice yellow right now. You have to try the mistflower. It spreads, but is not hard to remove. It is also a great butterfly plant.

Thanks David. It was the purple stems and fading flowers of the blue mistflower that caught my eye. Merry Christmas to you too!
